- Gottheil, Richard James Horatio
(1862-1936)
American orientalist, son of Gustav Gottheil. He was born in Manchester, England, and was taken to New York in 1873. From 1886 he taught Semitic languages at Columbia University; he also served as director of the Oriental Department of the New York Public Library from 1896. He was an active Zionist, and served as president of the American Federation of Zionists from 1898 to 1904. He published studies of Zionism and of Semitic languages.
